DIY costumes - masquerade as your favorite farm friend!
As promised in the Great Kids newsletter, we are posting some DIY ideas for halloween costumes. As we pointed out in the newsletter article, it really can be fun for you and your child to make a costume together!! All it takes is a little creativity (and some old clothes or household items or craft scraps)!!
Here’s my contribution to the DIY costume collection…..enjoy!! And please let us know if you used any of these ideas - or send a picture!!
Make your toddler into his/her favorite animal:
Does your little one want to masquerade as her favorite farm friend? It’s easier than you might think!
1) Start with solid colored pajamas. The long sleeves and long pants will add warmth on a cooler Halloween night.
2) Add a tail with a piece of cut-out felt and pin to our wee one’s tooshie.
3) Pick up “ears” in the form of a headband from your local costume or party store – or make yourself with a plain headband and cut-out felt hot-glued to the top.
4) Add whiskers, nose, rosy cheeks, or other facial features with non-toxic face paint. Face Paint crayons are usually available at the costume or craft store.
For older kids who want to don creature costumes, you can start with opaque tights and a leotard or long t-shirt instead of jammies.
****Now get creative:
For a cow, use white pajamas and draw on the black spots with fabric paint or a sharpie (it probably goes without saying, but draw the spots when your wee one isn’t WEARING the costume!) Use a tin “milking pail” as a trick-or-treat candy bucket.
For a pig, use pink pajamas and draw or paint a “mud puddle” on the bottoms of the sleeves and pantlegs.
For a cat, pin a ball of yarn to a sleeve, and let the younger sis or brother be a cute mouse!!
For a horse, make a “mane” to attach to the headband – cut a long strip of yellow felt about 1” wide. Hot-glue the 1” side to the headband, and glue or tie cuts of yellow yarn all over the felt. Make a matching tail the same way and pin it to your jammies.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST - make sure to don your creative costumes and join us for some fun at Halloween Rocks on October 31st in the Kentlands!!!
